Start of Guitar lessons

After a five-month wait, guitar lessons have commenced for those who submitted their applications in late November. The participating pupils will now have the opportunity to engage in weekly 30-minute lessons aimed at nurturing and advancing their guitar skills and overall musicianship. Following conversations with the 14 boys currently enrolled in these lessons, it is evident that they have been enjoyable and fruitful experiences.

We would like to inform you that applications for instrumental lessons in the upcoming academic year will open soon. If you are interested in pursuing lessons in keyboard, vocals, guitar, drums, or steel pan, we encourage you to reach out to Miss Harrison for further information and registration.

Warhammer Club

During this week's gathering at Warhammer Alliance, our new club members dedicated themselves to putting the final touches on their space marines, while our veteran pupils bid farewell to the previous edition of Warhammer 40,000. We are excited to announce that starting next week, the club will unveil the eagerly anticipated Warhammer 10th Edition, offering pupils the opportunity to experience the updated rules and engage in battles against a new faction, The Tyranids.

Additionally, we were fortunate to have Oliver H from 7A1 share some of the incredible models he has skillfully painted alongside his father during the half-term break. It is truly remarkable to witness the exceptional quality of these models, particularly considering that they are among Oliver H earliest creations. Take a moment to admire the meticulous attention to detail, especially in the eyes of the individual sporting the red helmet.

French half-term revision sessions

We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the pupils who dedicated their time to attending the French revision sessions during the recent half-term holiday. The commitment and effort demonstrated on these days have filled us with immense pride. We would like to give special recognition to Awab E (11B3), Jahrreyl M (11T1), Clay J (11T1), James M (11A2), and Dominic O (11B3) for their exceptional hard work throughout the day.

The revision sessions focused intensively on preparing for the writing exams, which took place on June 5th and contribute significantly to the GCSE French overall grade, accounting for 25%. Pupils revisited techniques for describing photographs in French and honed their skills in crafting 40, 90, and 150-word essays. We were genuinely impressed by the pupils' ability to incorporate complex structures into their written pieces, which they produced from memory.

During the sessions, we also engaged in interactive French revision games on Kahoot, where Clay and Jahrreyl emerged as winners in the Kahoot challenges. As a token of appreciation, all pupils received cupcakes to acknowledge their remarkable efforts.

It is worth mentioning that revision sessions have been organised during various school holidays this year, including October, February, Easter, and May. We extend our sincere gratitude to every pupil who actively participated in these sessions. Their self-motivation to excel and valuable contributions have exemplified our school values. We hope that these efforts will yield fruitful results on Results Day in August, and we eagerly anticipate celebrating your accomplishments.

Furthermore, we would like to express our appreciation to the pupils who diligently attended the online Teams lessons conducted weekly by Madame Cousin. Well done to each and every one of you for your dedication and commitment.

A Night At The Musicals

Get ready to be swept away on a musical journey as Turves Green Boys School presents "A Night At The Musicals" on Wednesday, 12th July. Brace yourself for an evening filled with extraordinary performances, as our talented pupils bring to life captivating extracts from four incredible shows.

Our journey begins with the heartfelt and inspiring story of "Dear Evan Hansen." Witness the remarkable transformation of Evan Hansen, a high school pupil who, despite his social anxiety, discovers his own meaningful role in an unexpected tragedy.

Next, prepare to be transported to a future world devoid of musical instruments in "We Will Rock You." Experience the exhilaration as a courageous rebel unearths the archives, leading to the renaissance of Rock and Roll, igniting the spirit of music once again.

Step back in time to the enchanting year of 1838, where a spirited young orphan learns the art of mischief and survival. From the beloved melodies of "Food Glorious Food" to the infectious rhythms of "Oom Pah Pah," you'll be enthralled by the musical and dance performances from the timeless classic, "Oliver."

Lastly, our talented pupils will take centre stage to showcase their own rendition of the electrifying songs from "School of Rock." Be prepared to be blown away by their passion, energy, and sheer talent as they rock the stage like never before.

Join us on this remarkable evening of theatrical magic, where dreams come alive through music and storytelling. The dedication and hard work of our pupils have brought these captivating performances to life, and we can't wait to share this unforgettable experience with you.

Save the date, Wednesday, 12th July, and let "A Night At The Musicals" immerse you in a world of joy, inspiration, and unbridled talent.

Eco-club gets muddy!

The eco-club has been reading up on how to sow seeds and have started a trial run of growing carrots and French beans. They are learning the skills of growing their own produce by trial and error so that next year they can start their own little allotment and provide their peers with fresh, homegrown fruit and vegetables. We’ll see how these first ones get on!

Year 10 visit the Warm Place

The Warm Place initiative, introduced by Birmingham City Council, aims to establish a network of free-to-use Warm Welcome sites throughout the city, providing essential support and services to address the cost of living crisis. In collaboration with partners and inspired by the community response during the pandemic, the council is working alongside voluntary and community sector organisations to expand these spaces, offering a welcoming environment for individuals to engage in activities, access services, receive practical advice, and connect with their community.

Current locations include leisure centres, the Northfield arts forum, and the Spitfire advice centre. Warm Welcome spaces are designed to be accessible, providing heating and basic refreshments, while fostering inclusivity, non-judgmental support, and the ability to guide visitors towards additional assistance.

Turves Green Boys’ School has been involved from the outset, with our hospitality and catering pupils contributing treats such as flapjacks, cakes, and apple pies. We have also extended invitations to our new community friends, inviting them to celebrate with us at events such as art shows and musical performances, and we are even welcoming the entire church community to our summer musicals evening.

Young Minds Wellbeing Champions

We were delighted to host Mr. D Green from Young Minds, a Mental Health Charity, at Turves Green Boys' School last week. Mr. D Green conducted training for our new Mental Health Champions, fostering an understanding of mental health, resilience building, and exchanging ideas on enhancing mental health understanding and support within our school community. Over the next two weeks, our Champions will survey their peers to gather their perspectives, which will be shared at our upcoming Young Minds Conference and used to create a comprehensive mental health action plan.

We applaud the boys for taking the lead on this vital project and commend them for their outstanding efforts!

French GCSE Speaking Exams

A huge ‘well done’ to all of the Year 11 pupils who completed their French speaking exams last week. The effort that the pupils put into the preparation for these exams was second to none. A special vote of thanks goes to A Elsanousi, M Chandigere and R Swift who supported their classmates with revision. Many pupils were in school at 08:00 to revise, and some gave up their breaks and lunch breaks to practise with their French teachers and their peers. We are immensely proud of all your hard work! Merci!

We would also like to congratulate all of the pupils who attended revision sessions in the October and February half-term breaks, as well as over Easter and look forward to seeing you in the May half-term.

Sessions will run on the Tuesday and Wednesday during the half-term break.
