GCSE results improve across the board

Turves Green Boys' School are celebrating a fantastic set of GCSE results. Our pupils have certainly embraced the school’s ethos of 'Striving for Excellence'. The number of pupils achieving a grade 5+ in English and Maths has seen a 13% increase and pupils achieving the top grades of 7 to 9 has seen an even larger upward trend.

Headteacher, Mr Till, said "We are over the moon with the achievements our pupils this year.  These results truly reflect the hard work and commitment of our pupils, parents and staff. They are even more impressive considering schools nationally are seeing a dip in their results this year and we have bucked this trend. The vast majority of our pupils will secure their first choice for post 16 studies where I'm sure they will go on to be even more successful in their chosen career path"

Some of our top performers are pictured here; O Choi achieved 6 grade 9's, 2 grade 8's and 3 grade 7's, he will go on to study A-levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Biology. M Blundell secured 1 grade 9, 2 grade 8's, 3 grade 7's and 3 grade 6's and he will commence his Electrical Engineering apprenticeship in September. D O'Connor 1 grade 9, 5 grade 8's, 2 grade 7's and 2 grade 6's. F Jiggins managed to gain 1 grade 9, 2 grade 8's and 5 grade 7's; he is studying A-levels in Maths, Further Maths, History and Law at college.

Allies Club Fashion Show 2023

The Allies Club Fashion Show 2023: A fabulous display of creativity and sustainability!

We are thrilled to present Turves Green’s first annual Allies Club Fashion Show. The fashion show took place on 20th July 2023 and was a remarkable event where 15 pupils showcased their extraordinary creations made from recycled materials and old clothes. Prior to the show, the pupils enjoyed the challenge of making their clothes and accessories from start to finish, from ripping apart fabrics, to cutting cardboard and sewing materials together. Pupils made items such as cardboard Star Wars suits, two wizards from Harry Potter and a tablecloth ball gown!

The Allies Club fashion show was not just about flaunting stylish outfits on the runway but was also a challenge that demanded dedication, innovation and enthusiasm. For weeks leading up to the event, the pupils put in many hours of hard work, collaborating as a team and seeking guidance from each other to put on a fantastic show for the teachers and support staff at Turves Green.

The process began with collecting and sourcing recycled materials and old clothes from within the school community and beyond. Pupils had to brainstorm and experiment with various design ideas, incorporating their creativity to breathe new life into these discarded items. They learned about sustainable fashion practices and how small actions like upcycling and repurposing, can make a significant difference in reducing waste.

We are proud of those who participated in the fashion show, from the backstage designers to the runway models themselves, they all showcased the importance of the Turves Values and how by working together, respecting one another and understanding their differences they were able to put on a successful show.

Our gratitude to the pupils and staff who helped, supported and cheered for our budding fashion designers and we are excited for next year’s fashion show.

A Night at the Musicals

An evening of Music Dance and Drama took place at Turves Green Boys School on Wednesdays 19th July when the boys took to the stage to perform in “A Night At The Musicals”.

Pupils performed extracts from Dear Evan Hansen, We Will Rock You, Oliver Twist and School of Rock. With this being the first Musical to be performed at TGBS, it certainly did not disappoint.  It really was an evening of theatrical magic, where dreams came alive through music and storytelling. The dedication and hard work of our pupils brought these captivating performances to life. When the curtains closed the audience gave a roaring round of applause for our talented pupils. The Performing Arts team are already excitingly planning the next School Musical – so watch this space

Heart Dissection

This week, Year 9 classes are concluding their academic year by engaging in heart dissection activities. Miss Mansell and Dr. Patchett initiated the process with 9Sc3, allowing pupils to apply their knowledge of heart structure to a real-life scenario. During the dissection, pupils honed their dissection skills by employing safe techniques for handling biological samples and utilising scalpels to expose the left and right ventricles of a sheep heart. We were particularly astounded by the contrasting thickness of the right ventricle in comparison to the left, as well as the delicate nature of our heart valves despite their crucial role in ensuring proper blood flow direction. Congratulations to the pupils of 9Sc3 for their outstanding participation in this lesson.

Salters Discovery Day

This term, Dr. Patchett and a team of eight Year 10 pupils had the opportunity to participate in the Salters' Discovery day hosted at Aston University.

During the event, Dr. Stephen Worrall and Dr. Katie Chong introduced our pupils to the fascinating challenges scientists are currently addressing in the field of "Green Chemistry." They shared valuable insights into the efforts being made to protect polar bears and penguins. Our pupils had the privilege of conducting a practical activity in the university laboratories, where they synthesised Ibuprofen using specialised glassware and state-of-the-art analytical equipment. The pupils then conducted purity tests on the synthesised compound.

The day concluded with a captivating careers lecture, featuring presentations from chemists engaged in research, industry, and academia. Our pupils actively participated by asking insightful questions, which were thoughtfully answered by the experts.

We commend our pupils for their outstanding work as scientists and for representing our school with excellence at this remarkable event.

PSHE Homework

During this half term, Year 7 students have been actively exploring the topic of racism during their PSHE sessions. George has demonstrated commendable efforts by creating an engaging poster that effectively highlights coping strategies and actionable steps to support individuals experiencing racism. We greatly appreciate George's dedication and encourage him to continue producing such valuable work.

Well done, George!

Far From Home

Matrix ‘Far From Home’ - Turing 2023-24

Sweden, Italy, Peru

We are delighted to announce that, for the third year running, Matrix Academy Trust has had another successful Turing bid.

The Turing Scheme is the UK government’s programme to provide funding for international opportunities in education and training across the world. It supports Global Britain by providing an opportunity for UK organisations from the higher education, further education, vocational education and training and schools sectors to offer young people  life-changing experiences.

This year, pupils in Year 8 from across Matrix schools will be visiting Sweden. Year 10 will be exploring ancient history in Italy. Year 12 students will be travelling around the world to Peru.

We chose ‘Far From Home’ as the name of our 2023-24 Turing project because we are committed to promoting an international outlook with our pupils. For our young people to be successful, we need to do whatever we can to broaden their horizons - and one way of doing this is to take them ‘far from home’. We will be making sure the pupils who are selected to go on these visits will be those that will benefit most from them.

More information about these opportunities will be shared in September.

Transition Evening and Transition Day

We were thrilled to host our Transition Evening on 11 July, followed by the Transition Day for our incoming Year 7 pupils. The Transition Evening proved to be a valuable occasion for families to meet the Headteacher, as well as the Senior Leadership Team, allowing them to gather essential information about the school and purchase their child's uniform in preparation for September.

The Transition Day provided our new Year 7 cohort with an immersive experience of their future school, enabling them to meet their peers, teachers, and other important staff members. The day was filled with engaging activities designed to help the pupils feel comfortable in their new environment. These activities encompassed Shortbread Making, Active Games, Creative Arts, Creative Writing, and a Mathematics Challenge.

We are pleased to share that every pupil conducted themselves impeccably throughout the day, setting an outstanding tone for their journey as pupils of Turves Green Boys' School. This is indeed a fantastic start to their educational adventure with us.

WELL DONE!
